Styles and options
Wood fence styles we build
Wood is the material Northern Virginia asks for by name. It takes paint and stain, it suits colonial and craftsman houses, and it costs less per foot than vinyl up front.

Board-on-board privacy
Overlapping boards with no gaps — full privacy that stays full as the wood seasons.

Shadowbox
Alternating boards that look finished from both yards and let a little air through.

Stockade
Solid pickets edge to edge — the classic budget-friendly privacy fence.

Picket
Gothic-point and flat-top pickets for front yards, in 3- and 4-foot heights.

Scalloped picket
A scalloped top line for garden fences and cottage-front walkways.

Wood gates
Walk gates and double drives built from the same boards as the fence.
Our process
How a wood fence job goes
Wood fails at the posts before it fails anywhere else, so that is where we spend the effort: posts set deep on concrete, rated for our frost line, with the right hardware.
Boards go up at the moisture they will live with, fastened with exterior-rated screws. Stain or leave it natural — we will tell you honestly what each choice means for the next five years.
Cost
What a wood fence costs
Wood is usually the lowest-cost privacy option per foot in Northern Virginia, with maintenance as the trade.

|---|---|
| Wood picket fence (per linear foot, installed) | $25–$45 |
| Walk gate (wood) | $600–$1,400 |
| Stain and seal (optional, per linear foot) | Quoted separately |

FAQ
wood fence questions
How long does a wood fence last in Northern Virginia?
Pressure-treated pine privacy fences commonly serve 15–25 years here; cedar can go longer with stain. Posts and gates age first — the parts water sits on. Good footings add years.
Wood or vinyl — which should I pick?
Wood costs less per foot and takes color; vinyl costs more up front and asks for almost nothing afterward. The honest comparison with numbers is in our vinyl vs wood guide.
How much does a wood privacy fence cost?
Typical planning range is $30–$60 per linear foot installed. A 150-foot backyard line lands roughly $4,500–$9,000 before gates and removal. Your estimate confirms it.
Do you stain the fence after installation?
We can quote stain and seal as a separate line. New pressure-treated boards need to dry before staining — we will tell you the honest timing.
Board-on-board or shadowbox — what is the difference?
Board-on-board overlaps boards on one face for total privacy. Shadowbox alternates boards so both yards see a finished face, with small gaps that let wind through.
Do I need a permit for a wood fence?
Material does not change permitting — jurisdiction does. Fairfax County generally requires no building permit but caps front-yard fences at 4 feet; side and rear can reach 7 feet. We check for your address and file what is needed.
Can you replace just the fallen section?
Often, yes. If damage is under about a quarter of the line, repair usually beats replacement. We price both when it is close.
