Styles and options
Ranch and deer fence options we install
West of the Toll Road the jobs change: long lines, livestock, and deer pressure. We build fence for horses first, sightlines second, and budget last.

Black ranch rail
2-, 3-, and 4-rail steel-and-polymer ranch rail — the Loudoun standard.

Crossbuck and gates
Crossbuck panels and farm gates for drives and paddock entries.

Rail with horse mesh
Rail lines backed with no-climb mesh for foals, dogs, and goats.

Long boundary runs
Perimeter lines priced to acreage — the footage is the job.

Driveway entries
Farm gates with solar operators where power does not reach.

Split rail
Classic split rail for frontage and garden edges on country lots.
Our process
How a ranch rail job goes
Acreage fencing is a survey job as much as a fence job. We walk the line with you, flag it, and confirm the corners before a single post goes in.
Posts go deep and braced at corners and gates — the parts a horse leans on. Deer exclusion adds height and mesh; horse safety adds visibility and smooth faces.
Cost
What a ranch rail costs
Ranch fencing is priced by footage and terrain more than by style — long straight lines are the best value in fencing.
| Black ranch rail (per linear foot, installed) | $12–$25 |
|---|---|
| Split rail (per linear foot, installed) | $12–$22 |
| Rail with no-climb horse mesh (per linear foot) | $20–$35 |
| Deer exclusion (height + mesh add-on) | Quoted on the walk |
| Farm gates | $600–$2,000 each |

FAQ
ranch rail questions
What is the best fence for horses?
Visible, smooth, and strong: ranch rail or rail backed with no-climb mesh. No-climb mesh stops foals and hooves; rail gives the visibility horses need. We build both together on most paddocks.
How tall should deer fencing be?
Deer clear low fences easily — exclusion usually starts around 7 to 8 feet, or lower fence angled outward with mesh. On wooded Loudoun lots we design to the deer pressure you actually have.
How much does ranch rail cost per foot?
Typical planning range is $12–$25 per linear foot installed, less on long straight runs. Mesh, terrain, and gates add to it. A walk of the line gets you the real number.
Black ranch rail or wood split rail?
Black ranch rail (steel with polymer) never rots and stays black. Wood split rail costs less and suits frontage. Many properties run split rail at the road and black rail at the paddocks.
Can you automate a farm gate?
Yes — solar operators are common where power does not reach the drive. See our gate page for swing and slide options.
Do you fence pasture for other livestock?
Yes — goats, cattle, and alpacas all change the mesh and height math. Tell us what is going in the field.
