Fence Cost Calculator

This calculator gives a planning range for your fence in Northern Virginia or Maryland: material per-linear-foot ranges for 2026, plus gates and old fence removal. It is a starting point — the free on-site estimate is the number you can build on.

Pick your material, footage, gates, and whether the old fence comes out. The range updates as you go, using the same 2026 planning ranges we publish in the cost guide.

What is a realistic fence cost example?

A typical Vienna backyard: 160 feet of wood privacy, two 4-foot walk gates, and an old chain link line to pull. At the planning range, wood lands between $4,800 and $9,600, gates add roughly $1,200 to $3,000, and removal adds $640 to $1,600 — call it $6,600 to $14,200 all-in before permits. The same 160 feet in vinyl plans at $6,400 to $11,200 plus the same gates and removal. Both scenarios assume straightforward side-yard access and no steep grade; the estimate walk is what prices slope, soil, and gate placement honestly.

How the calculator works

The ranges come from the same table we price against every week: per-linear-foot material costs for 2026 in Northern Virginia and Maryland, plus standard gate and removal add-ons. We round to the nearest $50 so the range behaves like a planning number, not a quote. Where your project sits inside the range depends on the four things the calculator cannot see: grade, access, soil, and how much of the old fence fights back on removal day.

What this calculator does not know

It cannot see your slope, your side-yard access, your soil, or your HOA. It also cannot price a masonry pier or a torn-out garden bed. That is what the estimate walk is for — request one free and we will measure it with you.

Ranges behind the calculator

Every range here matches the 2026 cost guide for Northern Virginia and Maryland: chain link $18–$30, wood privacy $30–$60, vinyl $40–$70, aluminum $40–$75, composite $60–$100, iron $60–$120, ranch rail $12–$25 per linear foot installed. Gates add $600–$1,500 each; removal adds $4–$10 per foot.

FAQ

Guide FAQ

How accurate is this fence cost calculator?

It is a planning range, not a quote. It uses the same per-linear-foot ranges we publish for 2026. Slope, access, soil, and gates change the real number — the free estimate captures those.

Does the calculator include permits?

Most Northern Virginia residential fences need no building permit, so it is not a line item there. Montgomery County permits add time and handling — included in our scope on the estimate.

Can I calculate an automatic gate?

Yes — check the automatic gate box and the range adds $4,500–$12,000 for a single or double swing with operator. Slide and cantilever gates price higher.
